A beaming Scott Zaremba attended Monday's award ceremony at his new Zarco 66 Earth Friendly Fuels station with a hint of sadness.
The family company's original station, opened 32 years ago on U.S. Highway 59 six miles south of Lawrence, had closed for good Saturday in the name of progress.
The Kansas Department of Transportation paid $900,000 three years ago for the property at 647 E. 1250 Road, and Zaremba's business had to be out by Tuesday.
"We're closing one and we're opening another," Zaremba said. "We hope we're moving forward in the Earth Friendly fuels, and we'll start the next generation."
See Zaremba discuss the old station and what it meant to his family, and the community, in exclusive video at www.ljworld.com, where you can also see:
● U.S. Rep Dennis Moore, D-Kan., explain how Zaremba's new station can play a role in the world's ongoing energy debate.
● John Askew, regional administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency, outline what makes the new station a notable advancement in green operations.

This Stan Zaremba is just a graduate huckster from the Conoco/Phillips school of green hucksterism. He's selling gasoline made from imported oil. That's about the size of it.
