With his full gray beard and long black coat, Kerry Altenbernd seemed to step effortlessly into the role of legendary abolitionist John Brown. He paced the stage, at times pounding his fist on the podium for added emphasis, as he recounted the life of the controversial figure who holds a central place in the history of Lawrence and the state.

After the Douglas County Commission finished canvassing votes today, it’s official. Sandy Elliott’s write-in campaign ousted long-time Palmyra Township Trustee Rex Hagerman, who was also a write-in candidate. Johnson edged him by four votes, 28-24.
Protester takes stand in manhole

Bob Bigsby’s protest of the Sixth Street sewer project didn’t last long Thursday, but he got his point across. Bigsby, with his broken back and all, climbed into the hole in front of his Sixth Street home at 7 a.m. and didn’t come out until City Administrator Jeff Dingman got there at 8 a.m. to talk to him.
Saturday shooting injures one

Brian L. Pitts, a 35-year-old Baldwin City man, was in Douglas County Court Monday as a result of an early Saturday morning shooting in Baldwin City. He was charged with aggravated battery and his bond was reduced to $75,000 from $500,000.
