I’m truly thankful this year

I found out what heaven is like — four guys decked out in Kansas City Royals gear at Wrigley Field. Heading into the holidays, that’s what I’m most thankful about this year. It turned into the best Father’s Day I’ve ever had.
Legislative duo a first since 1863

Abraham Lincoln was President the last time Baldwin City had both a Senator and member of the House of Representatives serving in Topeka. That was 1863.
Golf course raises ire at council

A heated discussion once again took place as the Baldwin City Council had its annual review of the lease for the Baldwin City Municipal Golf Course. The Chappell property was purchased four years ago for $550,000 by the city. It was bought with the idea of turning the area into a recreation area for everyone. So far, it’s continued as a nine-hole, sand-green golf course.
Low prices don’t make for happy harvest

Fall harvest has gone well for the most part, yield-wise, for area farmers. Unfortunately, like the stock market, they’ve seen the prices paid for their grain crash.
No salt on downtown sidewalks

Winter’s ice and snow are just around the corner, but downtown businesses will have to have a new game plan this year for battling the elements. Because of the $1.8 million Downtown Streetscape Project replaced all the sidewalks downtown, traditional salt can not be used to melt the ice.

When I awoke early Tuesday morning, way too early, I noticed something right away. It was the wind blowing hard. I thought at the time that it was the wind of change. Turns out, it was.
Baldwin School District voters give nod to bond issue

Despite tough economic times, Baldwin School District voters gave approval Tuesday to a $22.9 million bond issue by a slim margin.

The Baldwin City Municipal Golf Course's future was discussed at Monday's city council meeting.

Baldwin City crews work to get the community Christmas tree in its stand Monday morning. The tree stands in the empty lot between the post office and Lumberyard Arts Center. The annual Light Parade and tree lighting ceremony will take place Nov. 29.

City workers remove snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of the Baldwin City Public Library last winter. This year, city administrators are asking downtown business owners to not use salt on the new sidewalks.

Area farmers, such as Todd Dwyer, shown here near Vinland, have been harvesting corn and soybeans recently. While the harvest has gone well, the prices aren't so good.
