Both Baldwin Junior High School varsity girls’ basketball teams are having successful starts to their seasons. On Monday, both squads faced off against Paola, but split the results.
Mustangs’ offense stampedes Baker

SIOUX CITY, IOWA — A solid offensive performance by Baker University wasn’t enough against the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ top scoring team here Saturday. Baker’s 373 yards weren’t enough to keep up with Morningside College’s 565 yards from scrimmage. Throw in an interception and a blocked punt and the Mustangs routed the Wildcats 65-27.
Holidays heat up Saturday with Light Parade

Santa Claus is coming to town. He’ll be in Baldwin City on Saturday evening to light the community Christmas Tree downtown. Santa will conclude the annual Light Parade as he arrives downtown on an antique fire engine. He will choose a child to help him flip the switch, which has become an annual tradition in Baldwin City.
Volunteers assemble FireTree playground

Thanks to 24 warmly dressed Baldwin City volunteers, a neighborhood of children will soon be able to enjoy swings and slides just a block or two from their homes. At 8 a.m. Saturday, the group of community volunteers began working on constructing a new playground. Eight hours later, the FireTree Estates subdivision was the recipient of a community gift.
Wildcats make school history

It only took Matt Germain 34 seconds to lift his Baker University men’s soccer team to victory Saturday. Of course, that was after the Wildcats dueled Park University for 90 minutes of scoreless soccer at Liston Stadium. Less than a minute into the overtime period, the Baker junior booted the winning goal.
Baker football season ends at Morningside

Light Parade set for Nov. 29

Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce members are hoping to avoid a repeat of last year as far as the annual Light Parade is concerned. A year ago, ice covered the streets of Baldwin City before the parade, causing it to be canceled.
Baker to square off with NAIA’s top scoring team

It’s been 15 years since Baker University has qualified for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Football Championship Series. Legendary coach Charlie Richard was running the Wildcats’ regime in 1993. Now, in 2008, Mike Grossner is at the helm. In his fifth year, Grossner has his Wildcats (8-3) headed to the 16-team playoffs.
Winter sports begin practices

It’s official now. The football pads are off, soccer balls are in storage and there are no more high school runners jogging around town. Baldwin High School athletes have moved inside. They are staying warm in gymnasiums, hitting the hardwood or grappling on the mats. Yes, the winter sports’ season is already here for the Bulldogs.
Burkhart selected to all-league team

Although the Baldwin High School volleyball team’s season was a disappointment, there was one bright spot for one Bulldog. Sophomore Ramie Burkhart was the lone BHS player to earn any honors from the Frontier League coaches. Burkhart was selected to the second-team All-Frontier League.

Baldwin City kicked off the Christmas season with its annual Light Parade on Saturday night. Despite cold temperatures and a steady drizzle, the usual crowd of community members came out to watch the event. Here a Christmas sign was being pulled by two dogs in the parade.
